Photoshop Layers, Masks and Non Destructive Editing
Tomorrow night

One of Photoshop's most powerful editing tools is the use of layers.
Easily mastered, the use of non destructive layers opens up endless possibilities to your photo editing.
Come along and find out more on Monday 9th March at 7.30 pm in the Pittwater RSL Auditorium.
What to bring:
  • You can either just watch or,
  • bring your laptop with Photoshop already installed and working and follow along AND bring whatever you need to connect a card with photos on it OR your camera to your laptop ready to transfer files to your laptop,
  • Your knowledge of how to use your laptop, and
  • Pen and paper might be handy too.

INTRODUCTION TO STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Street Photography is exactly as it sounds, taking photographs on public streets. These photographs can be varied - people, buildings ,signs, passing traffic, lane ways or of anything interesting happening.
However my personal preference is to have at least one person some where in every shot.
Street shots can be posed, where you first ask an interesting stranger if you can photograph them.
Candid, when you take the shot without asking, or where the subject or subjects are busy and not paying attention to you or your camera.
During our photo-walk you will be encouraged to try all these options.

CAMERA EQUIPMENT

Almost any camera, DSLR, Film, Compact, Point and Shoot, or even Camera Phone are suitable for this style of photography. Often small is better, and those with a silent shutter even better!
For DSLR's fixed focal length lenses are ideal - 24,50 or 35 mm work well. If you do not have any of these, short zooms are OK.
Avoid long zooms, they scare people! Zoom with your feet.
Avoid using flash, unless you first have permission to photograph the subject.

CAMERA SETTINGS
A good place to start is in Aperture Priority at say F5.6 making sure the shutter speed is around 125 sec. Adjust ISO if necessary to achieve this.

Check histogram and use exposure compensation as required. Questions around settings can be covered on the day. Be familiar with how to adjust your cameras settings , no matter what camera you use.

Street action and lighting can change quickly, so must your settings.

GENERAL
Photography is about the light, look for it, even if it is just fleeting.

Shoot on the sunny side of the street, or in open shade. Avoid dark places.

Be careful of very bright backgrounds.

It you find a well lit background, wait until some one walks into it, be patient.
Smile and be friendly, especially towards people who may see you taking their picture.
Try black / white. If your camera allows shoot Raw plus Jpeg. Set the Jpeg to record B/W, that way you will have both colour(the raw) and b/w (the jpeg) of each shot. Note the b/w jpeg preview is the one you will see on the back of the camera.

This outing will take place Sat.14th March ,9.45am for a10.00am start, on King Street Newton, where I can assure you we will see a variety of interesting people. A total of around 3 hours, stopping for coffee/lunch at the end should you wish.
